The history of paper bags
How would we live if there weren't paper bags? Their are used for many different things: lunch, a shopping bag, dustbin bag. Their help us with housekeeping. Have you ever thought when the paper bags were created? The answer is in '50 XIX century.
Before the paper bags came into being people were using containers for keeping things inside. Perhaps baskets? If the customer hadn't had a container for their shopping, the salesman would have twisted a piece of paper in shape of horn. It was named horn of plenty. If the shops had been very crowded, the salesman would have prepared the horns in advance. Their were the first paper bags.
The first machines that were producing paper bags were created in '60 XIX century. S.E. Petee is well-know because he made the best use of them. However each of these machines were producing a little different paper bags. In 1869 Unia Company of Pennsylvania created bagmachine that joined together the best features of others machines. Indeed, that company started with production of paper bags.
Until 1875 century Union Company od Pennsylvania was making so many paper bags that they changed the name of company into Union Bag and Paper Company. In the first year they were producing 606 million bags. That was a great number in those days. Mass production helped their in cutting down the prices.
In the same time Margaret Knight was working on a new factory of paper bags. She inventeda new part of the bagmachine that automatically bended and sticked together bags. At the beginning nobody has taken her seriously because she was a women and their were thinking that she didn't have idea of bags. Finally her invention was fixed in the machine that is thougt to be "mother-shopping bag" and it is used nowadays. Margaret Knight launched Eastern Paper Company in 1870 century and she patented 26 others inventions.
